." >>> welcome to "cbs this morning." i'm jeff glor with rebecca jarvis charlie rose. gayle king and norah o'donnell are off. >>> on the ground and in the air on this busy day before christmas, there's trouble. >> and the problem is a storm system that hit the west coast over the weekend. now it's moving east threatening to cause problems all week long. anna warner is at dallas/ft. worth airport. anna, good morning. >> reporter: we're seeing a steady stream of travelers on their way to destinations. things on the west coast have cleared up. no major flight delays out there so far, but people heading to other holiday destinations may encounter some trouble. that's because this fast moving storm is heading over the rocky mountains and is expected to drop a lot of snow on the midwest as it heads to the northeast. travelers may see problems. those hoping for a white christmas will get their wish, but they may be stuck seeing santa in the airport. >> we don't want to spend christmas at laguardia. >> reporter: more than 5,000 flights were cancelled this week as snow smothered
jones in the north bay. we mentioned our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri mentioned parts of sonoma county getting more than 8 inches of rain. let's brit in nbc bay area's cheryl hurd who joins us from the marin headlands. cheryl? >> reporter: we're live here in the marin headlands the commute on the golden gate looks fine. the stormy weather caused a lot of problems for a lot of people here in the north bay. the effects from this storm started early this morning. the lights went out on the bay bridge around 5:30. that power outage caused the metering lights to go down for two hours. putting the bridge and commuters into darkness, making the commute messy, slow, and dangerous. the north bay got the brunt of this storm. heavy rain toppled trees on to roadways and turned roads into small rivers. this is what it looked like on highway 1 near rohnert park. cars had nowhere to go but into flooding water. people in marin county are used to heavy rain and wind when it comes. >> last night trees were banging up against the wall. i mean the outside of the house and light flashing. so, you kn

strong storm coming up a little later on in the show. >> eye-opening numbers, jeff. thank you. rain, saturation and flooding. it's a problem for several parts of the bay area. that's why there's concern going into this weekend. here now is nbc bay area's marianne favro from san jose. >> reporter: chain saws were needed to remove a large ash tray from the walk way of this los altos home. it came crashing down this morning thanks to heavy winds. high winds also caused this power pole to slope, causing high-voltage lines to sag here on alpine road near palo alto. not motorists had to defor more than an hour. if you weren't sitting and waiting if your car today, then you were likely getting splashed. this section of coleman road in san jose was covered with several inches of rain. just one of many flooded areas in the south bay. and here on highway 87 a motorist was stranded as rain came down in sheets. >> i see pretty much accidents on the freeway right now. so i have to drive slow. i don't know. people don't know how to handle it. they drive too fast. >> reporter: while strip mall par
through the overnight hours leading to delays at sfo into tomorrow morning. and we go live to jeff bush now who's out there with more on the flight delays. >> reporter: i just got off the phone with the airport duty manager, and she just told me we're experiencing delays here at sfo of 30-90 minutes. and you can see that about half of all arrivals are affected. and that is the arrivals that are mostly affected. the reason that this happens is because when the fog comes around, they have to slow down the traffic of the airplanes. so they basically reduce about half of the arrivals to make it safe. jeff bush, live at sfo, kron4 news. >>> one family on san francisco's russian hill was startled awake when a 45-ton cypress tree uprooted and fell, crashing into their home. >> well, what happened was, at first it was just a huge explosion, and i thought it was an earthquake. and so i said it's okay! it was just an earthquake. and my son was in his room, and he ran in to get underneath the doorway, i said everything's okay. and thousand i came back into the -- then i came back into where my hus
burglaries which started this week in a well-lit part of town. jeff bush is in foster city with the details. what happened? >> reporter: this is one of the quieter communities in the bay area. but police remind residents that they are not immune to crime here. at least eight vehicles were broken into her on shell boulevard. it's a big street, well-lit, across the street from the library, and just across the corner from city hall. but thieves broke into the cars by smashing the windows and they took things like gps device, cellphones, purses and christmas presents. then it happened again last night! police want to remind people who are living here in foster city or coming to visit, it is important to take all of their valuables out of their car before they go to bed. >> apple's c eo, tim do you knowing, announced -- tim cook announced it will produce one of its existing lines of computers in the united states next year. he did not say which line, where, or how many jobs would be involved. but this announcement is a sign that more manufacturing jobs will be returning to the u.s. due to the
